JESÚS RUEDA

Born in 1961 in Madrid, he studied with Joaquín Soriano, Emilio López, Luis de Pablo and Francisco Guerrero. Later, he continued his studies with Manzoni, Gentilucci and Luigi Nono. He was Composer in Residence for the JONDE (the Spanish National Youth Orchestra).

He has long been recognized for his work in contemporany music circles. Very early in his career he received commissions from the Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris, the Novecento Música in Milan as well as the ONE (the National Orchestra of Spain) and the CDMC, among others.

His works are regularly performed by contemporany music groups such as: l´Ensemble InterContemporain, the Arditti String Quartet, Ananda Sukarlan and the Ensemble L´Itinteraire in Paris. His music can be heard at the most music festivals in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Down through the years he has won numerous prizes for his compositions; the most important are: the IRCAM Reading Panel (1995) and the Forum Junger Komponisten in Cologne (1992). He was awarded the SGAE twice in 1990 and 1991 and second prize ICONS in Turin (1991) as well as awards in the Netherland´s Gaudeamus Musicweek and Zurich´s World Music Days (ISCM).





He has also been a member of the jury at a number of Composition Competitions. A recently released CD on the German label Col-legno is devoted entirely to his works.

Together with the CDMC, the Cadaqués Orchestra International Conducting Competition commissioned him a work for the VI edition, Elephant Skin (2002). And in October of the same year the Cadaqués Orchestra spread his arrangement of Triana, from Iberia, on a tour around 11 countries of the South-East of Asia.

In November (2002) a concert devoted to his string music took place at the National Auditorium in Madrid.

At present, he is working on his third string quartet and his third symphony.

Guinjoan's musical training was undertaken in Barcelona and Paris, where he won many important prizes. In 1964, after following a busy career as a pianist, he established contact with the French musical avant-garde and decided to devote himself solely to composition.

Guinjoan has received commissions from many soloists, chamber music groups, and orchestras. Together with Juli Panyella, Guinjoan founded the ensemble Diabolus in Musica. He has conducted various ensembles and symphony orchestras both in Spain and abroad. Notable amongst his conducting achievements was the Spanish premiere of Stravinsky's Histoire du soldat. Between 1968 and 1975 Guinjoan was music critic for the newspaper Diari de Barcelona.
